Survey: Small Business Owners Show Signs of Confidence Along with Concerns

KeyBank’s 2024 Small Business Survey found that 65 percent of small business owners feel confident they could fund their operating expenses for one month with their cash reserves, if an unexpected need arose.

Still, 37 percent of business owners anticipate that inflation will slightly increase their operating costs and 27 percent expect a significant increase in operating costs in the next 12 months. The top challenges small business owners anticipate this year are fluctuating sales/revenue (35 percent), delayed payments from clients/customers (29 percent) and high overhead costs (28 percent).

Despite these concerns, small business owners say they are well-adjusted and taking precautionary measures to protect their businesses — and the employees and communities they serve. They are already implementing cost-cutting measures (32 percent), increasing cash reserves (30 percent) and exploring alternative financing options (22 percent). As one of the top indicators of financial resilience in the US, their actions could be the first signal of an improving economic environment.

“Running a business is not an easy task, and when coupled with uncertain economic conditions, rampant inflation and high interest rates, small business owners are faced with ambiguity,” says Mike Walters, president of business banking at KeyBank. “Their resilience is a testament to years of weathering financial uncertainty, and with their confidence remaining strong they’re able to power through the last leg of inflation and keep themselves on track for economic growth.”

The survey included 1,983 U.S. respondents who own or operate a small to medium-size business with an annual gross revenue of less than $10 million. It was completed in March 2024.

McLaren Flint Begins Final Phase of $61M Expansion, Enhancement

McLaren Flint, part of statewide McLaren Health Care, has broken ground on the final aspect of its $61 million multipronged expansion and enhancement project, a phase that will update the face of the longstanding hospital.

Construction has begun to enhance and completely overhaul the main entrance into McLaren Flint, which features a new canopy and design for improved traffic flow.

The launch of this construction follows expansion projects currently underway to increase the capacity and capabilities of the McLaren Proton Therapy Center and Karmanos Cancer Institute at McLaren Flint, respectively, projects representing an overall investment of $61 million into the hospital campus.

“Our undertaking of these projects to grow and enhance our services and facilities are truly an investment in Flint and all the patients we are privileged to serve throughout the region,” says Chris Candela, president and CEO of McLaren Flint. “It has been our pledge to ensure all of our patients have access to high-quality health care and a first-class experience, and this latest project is a symbol of our long-term commitment to that pledge to the communities we serve.”

Following months of planning, the project began to be realized with last year’s construction launch to expand the McLaren Proton Center with the addition of two upright treatment units from Leo Cancer Care to nearly double the center’s current care capacity.

Once underway, main entrance construction is expected to be completed in seven to eight months. Visitors and patients will be directed to a temporary main entrance accessible through the hospital’s emergency department adjacent to Beecher Road. Signage will safely direct traffic flow, and valet parking will be available seven days a week for a nominal fee.
